Luck

Introduction

Since I have gotten behind getting the Bible study out, I thought we would do a quick one week study to get September's topic done before we pick October's topic.  Of course, it turned into a two week study before I finally got my act together.

I think my son and I talked about his unlucky friend when we picked September's topic.  It reminded me of a book I had as a child called, "What Good Luck, What Bad Luck!"  It is a story of a child whose adventure bounces back and forth from good events to bad events.  However, my son's friend is the epitome of the expression, "If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all."

Cal Family - "Aunt Scott" & "Mama Brooks"

The expression is also appropriate for the 2021 Cal Bears football season.  The team has one win in the first six games.  While the games are close and have been very exciting, the fortuity has not gone our way.  I took a picture before the TCU game and the good luck was that I correctly predicted the final score of the game.  The bad luck was that I had the players' family members standing in the wrong places and Cal lost 32 to 34.  Next time, I will get a picture with Chase Garbers' mom (#7).

Here are my top 12 verses on Luck:

Jesus On Luck

Matthew 6:34 King James Version

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Luke 10:31-33 King James Version

31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.
32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.
33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,

Luke 13:4-5 King James Version

4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?
5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Luke 23:34 King James Version

34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Luck In The New Testament

Acts 1:26 King James Version

26 And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Romans 8:28 King James Version

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

1 Corinthians 15:35-37 King James Version

35 But some man will say, How are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come?
36 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die:
37 And that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that body that shall be, but bare grain, it may chance of wheat, or of some other grain:

James 4:14-15 King James Version

14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
15 For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.

Luck In The Old Testament

Leviticus 16:8-10 King James Version

8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the Lord, and the other lot for the scapegoat.
9 And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the Lord's lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering.
10 But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.

1 Samuel 6:8-9 King James Version

8 And take the ark of the Lord, and lay it upon the cart; and put the jewels of gold, which ye return him for a trespass offering, in a coffer by the side thereof; and send it away, that it may go.
9 And see, if it goeth up by the way of his own coast to Bethshemesh, then he hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that smote us: it was a chance that happened to us.

Proverbs 16:33 King James Version

33 The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord.

Ecclesiastes 9:11 King James Version

11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all.

Conclusion Of The Whole Matter

The good luck was that my son came up with a topic for September.  The bad luck was that the topic was not in the Bible.  I checked several translations and came up empty.  The good luck was that I found one version with "luck" in it.  The bad luck was that it only had one verse from the Apocrypha: Sirach 8:19 - Do not reveal your thoughts to every one, lest you drive away your good luck.  Maybe I should have kept this topic a secret.
